Job Description:

  • Linguist II – Italian
  • Client is looking for a Linguist to help us develop language components for a variety of voice-enabled technologies and products.
  • Client is seeking candidates with native or near-native fluency in French and/or Italian with strong linguistic data analysis and language technology experience to manage data collection, data synthesis and data annotation tasks, translation-localization and ML model improvements.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide linguistic expertise in the areas of syntax, semantics, pragmatics and sociolinguistics.
  • Provide linguistic expertise in the areas of phonetics, phonology, lexicography, dialectology, and NLP.
  • Build datasets, run and modify data pipelines, and train, analyze, evaluate machine learning models.
  • Build rules in rule-based systems, and improve data quality/coverage with scripts when needed to improve ML models.
  • Clearly communicate with project stakeholders.
  • Identify best practices and improve procedures across data systems.
  • Collaborate seamlessly with cross-functional teams, conversation designers, researchers, engineers, and product managers to improve a digital assistant.
  • Share work and give feedback to teammates.
  • Collaborate with other linguists and data operations teams in data collection, data curation, translation, localization and annotation efforts
  • Create annotation systems and guidelines
  • Evaluate and curate data sets for ML models
  • Assess model and data quality
  • Collaboratively develop complex and consistent linguistic analyses

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in general Linguistics or Linguistics with an emphasis on Romance languages, Computational Linguistics, Speech Science, or related field
  • Native or near-native fluency in French and/or Italian
  • Awareness of Italian and/or French linguistic, cultural, local norms
  • Knowledge of syntax, semantics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, corpus linguistics, and other areas of linguistics
  • Experience working with speech and text data in multiple languages
  • Familiar with Large Language Models (LLMs) and their applications
  • Comfortable working in a fast paced, highly collaborative, dynamic work environment
  • Strong organizational skills and detail oriented
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written

Preferred (additional) Qualifications:

  • PhD in Linguistics or Romance languages, language technologies, computational linguistics, speech science, or related field
  • Experience with database queries and data analysis processes (i.e. SQL, spreadsheets, R, Unix, or others)
  • intermediate or above skills in Python
  • Experience with machine learning frameworks, NLP Libraries and Tools.

Summary:

  • The main function of a Linguist is to determine Assistant data needs and setting strategic vision for data based model and product improvements.

Skills:

  • Knowledge of phonetics, phonology, sociolinguistics, dialectology and other areas of linguistics.
  • Experience of analyzing language data, solving language issues.
  • Intermediate Python, SQL skills and solid Regex knowledge.
  • Self-motivated and stay on top of owned areas proactively.
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Team player and comfortable with fast-paced work flow.
  • Take responsibility for task completion and schedule and be diligent to achieve the goals.
  • Able to work in not-fully-defined projects/space and proactively debug and seek out solutions.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in linguistics, language technologies, computational linguistics, speech science, or related field.
  • Native or advanced language skills in French or Italian is a must.
  • Native Spanish with advanced French or Italian can be considered.
  • Intermediate/advanced language skills on Spanish, India languages, Korean, Japanese, Portuguese, German is a plus.

Pay Range: $40/hr

The specific compensation for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role as well as the cost of labor in the market; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment.
