Summary
VSI’s Subtitling department is responsible for providing subtitling technical and style guide expertise to the business, upholding the company’s high linguistic and technical standards whilst carrying out QC, subtitling, proofreading, test evaluations and subtitling tool training amongst other tasks.
We are looking for an experienced and proactive individual to join us as a Tech and Language Specialist on a permanent basis. You will need to have a solid background in linguistics, be technically minded, have excellent time management, organisational and communication skills and demonstrable experience in working to tight deadlines.
This remote position has a timetable of 9:30 UK (GMT/BST) to 18:00 UK (GMT/BST). The role may be required to work beyond regular hours, depending on business needs or during peak periods.
Key accountabilities
- Carrying out full and spot technical QC of subtitles, FNs, CC files in all languages, and flagging and correcting technical issues, such as timing, positioning and any other non-linguistic content-related issues
- Preparing final deliverables, such as extracting partial and FNs from full subtitles
- Assessing the scope of recut jobs, as required, and QCing recuts
- Evaluating Subtitling/PL(DL)/translation tests technically and/or linguistically for potential new freelance suppliers and filling in evaluation reports
- Review client/internal rejection reports, review subtitle files and fix and/or provide feedback as necessary
- Testing new tools related to any tasks undertaken by the team
- Creating/updating language/subtitling guidelines for in-house and external resources
- Training new staff/freelancers on any relevant services, software/tools and guidelines used, as required
- Advising on client subtitling/language guidelines
- QCing/prepping/exporting files
- As required by the business:
Proofreading/carrying out linguistic QC on a range of material from rushes to technical texts, internal policies/documentation
Being an expert in your language, ensuring you stay up to date with the latest grammar/spelling rules and regulations
Producing subtitles/closed captions, transcriptions, translations, recuts/conforms, PL(DL), accessibility scripts and voice-over scripts for corporate videos, broadcast material and VOD platforms for various high-profile clients from all sectors of the media and public sector
Testing ASR/STT and MT engines as necessary and assessing them for accuracy based on content type/language
Providing in-house linguistic assistance
Essential Skills and Experience
In order to be successful for this role, candidates must demonstrate the following:
- Degree in audiovisual translation or similar
- English speaker to native standard
- Experience in a similar role in a translation / localisation environment
- QC and recut experience in a similar role
- Proven subtitling experience, working with various subtitling specs and software, ideally EZTitles and Ooona Toolkit
- Proven proofreading experience in a professional capacity
- Technically minded and quick to learn new tools
- Excellent organisational and time management skills
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced work environment
- Attention to detail and accuracy
- Self-motivated and able to use their own initiative
Desirable skills
- MT/ASR/STT post-editing experience
- MT/ASR/STT engine testing experience
