translate5 is an “open source translation system”. In this video, you’ll see my first experience with the cloud TMS. The goal was to translate a simple DOC and XLS. How did it go?
In this series, we look at the UX of all TMS tools in the localization industry. I’ve documented my whole journey with translate5 TMS from the first home page visit, through creating a project and translating the documents, to finally downloading the translated files.

Hi guys my name is Andrej Zito Welcome to the new episode of TMS UX reviews where I get to review all the TMS tools in our industry. From the UX perspective, In this video, I get to experience for the very first time the open source TMS called translate5. If you’re new to the series, what I’m basically trying to do I have a very simple word document and a very simple spreadsheet that I try to translate using the TMS tools of choice. And the way how I pick the TMS tool that I’m going to review next is very simple. 56789 word. Okay, I think we have 20 912-345-6789 Yeah, now we have 29. Oh, my God, I guess we have a new person on the list. So 29, sides on base, let’s roll the base 12345. Number 10. Okay, favorite 1-234-567-8910? translate5. Okay. It’s another theme is I have never, ever heard of. Okay, so the dice has selected translate5.

Before we get into the full experience of me vs. translate5. Let me make a quick disclaimer, everything that I say and sharing this video is just my personal opinion. And based on the title of the video, I mainly focus on the user experience, I try to look at the design, how intuitive the tool is. And all these things. By no means is this my suggestion or recommendation or whether this platform is right for you. Because you have various needs. And I also don’t look at all the features that the platforms give us. I’m really just trying to focus on the very simple thing of translating a document and a spreadsheet. So that was the disclaimer. I’ll shut up now. And well, you’ll hear more from me in a very short moment. So let’s get right into my experience. So let’s do the same thing that we do we start from this page. And my first impression is actually not that bad.

I like the fact that the x this big, it’s readable. The logo looks nice. I would say it’s it’s a it’s a it’s a it’s a different style to have text outside of the circle, which is good. Do they have the same? Yeah, they have the same here? Yeah, so the text goes out of the circle, which is good, it makes it more interesting. Then here, we have a gradient from white into yellow. So I guess yellow is the primary color, then we also see some of the blue, and then Black for the text. For the top menu, why translate5? The menu looks good. Okay, one thing I’m not sure if you can see it, if I hover over the menu items, there is a slight background color change on the item that I that I’m currently hovering over. But it’s not very visible. But it’s still there. I’m not sure if I think that the gradient in the in the menu list here is a good thing or not.

Honestly, I haven’t seen it anywhere before. This is the first time a first impression. I mean, my first thought was to say that I don’t like it. But actually, it’s not that bad. It’s a new experience for me. Either we have the search, okay. works this way. Okay, good. I mean, nothing, not much here, okay, when it comes to this one above the fold open source translation system. Okay. Cloud translation, review, post editing and terminology platform. So it’s more like a bunch of features. Here we have rooted in the community, by the language industry for the language industry, what makes translate5 unique community, solving your translation process needs file translation solution for you. A bunch of things.

The only thing that I’m not sure if it’s working is the hierarchy of the information. Typically, I would Assume that this thing here is like the main thing. But actually based on the copy, it may not be the main thing, maybe they actually wanted to make this think the main because this text, as you can see, it’s slightly smaller than this sticks here. So the bigger you want to have the biggest thing to come serve as a hook, the biggest font on your website. So normally I would expect this one to be the main thing and have the biggest font size, and then these three things which are kind of like a benefits to be slightly smaller. But maybe they did this on purpose. And the reason why I think that is that may be this text, I mean, just says like, okay, it’s open source, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, for blah, blah, blah.

But these things here are more like what makes them stand out? But I don’t know anyway. Maybe I’m just not computing this with my brain because it’s different than what I’m normally expecting from these kind of websites. A lot of the previous PMS that I looked at had the hierarchy, correct. So yeah. Are you sexually videos? No, it’s not a video. Yeah, for me does actually look like a video because the arrow image looks like it’s like a play button on a video, but it’s just the link that leads to their mission. I guess they explained the hero properly. So I would say that this should be the first thing because yeah, maybe maybe I am actually correct. Because these things I have a bigger text like rooted solving find something, something something. So technically, that should be the first thing that you should look at. But but then it has the the like, there are three things, you know, they’re competing for your attention.

So I guess that’s why when you look at other other websites that have like the, the, I don’t know if it’s called tagline or host called, you know, the main thing that you see in a bold, she’s like, Hey, this is the I don’t know, the easiest. I don’t know TMS for small lsps let’s say. So this is like their unique value proposition. So that would be the biggest text because that’s what they want to tell you like hey, please stay here and give us all of your time and look for more details. So here I would assume that they meant this to be that thing or am technically open source thing is maybe unique for them because like I said before, I haven’t seen we haven’t reviewed anything non commercial yet. But then I don’t know why these things are larger when it comes to the font size.

But otherwise this thing here looks actually very nice. The links look very cute. The only thing that was confusing for me is these things because it looks like a video another thing that I’m just that I just thought of is that when you actually look at the images, images look like yeah, now I just get it because the images are like it’s it’s one image that was chopped into three pieces because you can see like the the trees continue here then there’s the city and then there’s the what is it sunset or whatever that is. But thing is that I don’t know why they pick this like this one I would understood that group in the community. So there we have a tree, which has its roots, but then this images like they don’t fit to the text below to the benefit that they’re supposed to represent. So I don’t know why such choice. So that’s the only thing but otherwise Yeah.

You know, like when I told you in the beginning that I like the fact that the one size it’s so big and so nice and clean. Um, right now I’m thinking that yeah, that the hierarchy is definitely a little bit off. Because this text competes technically with this thing. And there’s a there’s a lot of things like the swan and then all the all the three benefits or whatever that is subtitles kind of like have the same same font size so you don’t know like where to look at first. It’s like a My first impression was like, Okay, this is big. So it’s easily readable it which it definitely is. But I don’t know, like, where to where to look. So that’s my comment about us. Otherwise, like, like I said, My first impression was good. Also, another thing that I just thought of is no, here we have the arrow is yellow, but also in the background with the sun gives you a lot of yellow as well.

So in this case, it might be better to pick a blue to make it stand out a little bit, or maybe they didn’t want it to stand out more, because I don’t know. But technically, we have the blue arrows here, which indicates a link so it wouldn’t be that off and the blue would still be look good here with this tree. But anyway, that the images just don’t fit for me. They don’t make sense. Okay, we go a little bit further down the page. Am I recording? I am recording. Good. Hi, recording. So we are here next section with a blue one. So definitely yellow, white, blue. Black. Colors are pretty good for me. No, no objection, outstanding features. Is this a video? It is a video? Why is the ratio so weird? outstanding features. Visual translation in context translation, text changes in the layout in real time. I don’t think there’s much many wrong things about it is just the first impression of this player is not good. And the graphics in the first slide just don’t fit the overall style that we’ve seen so far. No, this looks like a very I don’t know how it’s called. I think word had this kind of like clip art things. Was it the clipart or Word Art? Something like that? No, like the super, super colorful, saturated. crazy looking are supposed to be stylish bonds that just look very bad. So yeah, this thing this thing just doesn’t fit the rest. So I think maybe everything is left side, it’s just that this text kind of fit. So it looks like it’s in the center. And actually it’s inconsistent. Let me show you the three things. I think it’s inconsistent. Okay, there we have. So here I talked about this one that I generally like to see more. But this one is still kind of still kind of okay. This one if I’m not mistaken. No, I’m not. It’s definitely bigger than this one. And I think the font size is the same, because it’s basically just the title for the for the section. So I don’t know why this inconsistency. And then when we look at the bottom, I’m still keeping it here on this page before I scroll down. The icon above the quote makes the space padding on the top even smaller.

So we have three sections and three different headings on the top. Just because it’s a different section. I don’t think it should have different pedic Yeah, but so so this one is okay. This one is okay. It would be my preference more petting. This one to me is like not okay. This is too close to it. And again, we have the image that they used on the top I don’t know why they repeated here. I don’t know. But the contrast is pretty good. So here we have quotes I guess customer testimonials. We left trusting five never use trusted five actually interested now. I mean, it looks good. doesn’t have any title like our customers love us or something like that. It’s just plain quote. I mean, it would be better if the would be better if I mean these things were kind of like, put like in, in like a table format. Do you know what I mean? Like, so that each cell has the same bite. But that could be again, just me. I mean, first impression of this is good. I just don’t like it thinks they’re like, super off. Okay, next bar, what is this crowdfunding and curb of companies? I guess these are the people that contribute to it. We have this logo here. I saw this logo somewhere else. I think I was using it in some presentations that I did for a global. And we had this logo, I think in our template.

Because, again, it’s an inconsistency because all the sections previously started with a text. Now we have this image, which is like, what does it mean? And again, the whole section is a fucking like, Jesus. Community crowdfunding and crowd of companies. Okay, so Okay, I don’t know why this is here. We have a bunch of things. We have a dotted border around the things. not a huge fan of those, but I think it’s pretty good. Again, it seems like all the images are what say, left on, which is why we have this extra space here. And I’m not sure if it would be better if maybe, let’s say these four things were kind of like, even out I mean, spaced out evenly in the whole space. To make it look like all the logos are aligned to the center of the page instead of to the left side. Gambit could be just me and finally we have our fruit. With her foot.

The functionality with the links, I definitely don’t get some small things here and there. But overall, it’s pretty good. Definitely not the worst thing that I’ve seen. Um, so now how do we get it? hosted? See, why do they do that? Why do we? Why do we do this? Because it automatically scrolls down to this bar. What is it hide pricing and support? mostly by translate5’s developers aynd of trusted cloud or hosted on your server with professional support? Right? Try it out for 30 days.

Okay, so here we have a See, I think this is what I was talking about before, thinks that well, style style wise, it looks kind of like this one, except that this one has the arrow and this one doesn’t have it. Otherwise, it’s the text with the border around it, which looks kind of like a ghost button, but this one doesn’t do anything. And this one adds the arrow. I think what I’ve seen in some pages what I like is that if you have the arrow without the border, then you just kind of like when the hover you push out the arrow a little bit to make it look like it’s moving. You know what reacting to something but they wouldn’t work here because it would push out and extend the border on the right side but it would work here. So if we had the arrow here and then when you hover it would just move a little bit then yeah, but to me like truck three I don’t know why they have it as a ghost I think I would actually prefer to have this one with some colored background to make it stand out because everything goes you need to contact them but even actually for this one to contact here Yeah, everything actually leads to to the Contact Us form. So maybe let’s talk a little bit about the UI. I don’t know what I would say, I already shared my, my feeling. The fact that did loads. Some things there really makes me look like it’s like executing some I don’t know. I don’t know. This is what I never did any web app this way. Because Yeah, you can see all my movement is is it actually I don’t know much about this. But the feeling is that it’s like, like, like a typical desktop UI and the old fashioned one must I say? So what I what I didn’t like was the fact that the project, I think can only be based on one source file. When we did this, I could only pick one file. Not multiple files. Can you see that? mS? Nope, I cannot select multiple files. budge. So that’s that when we talk about this UI, um, so it’s kind of like I have a project. There’s like a frame which splits it into two parts, left and right. And even the right side is kind of like splitting the more frames.

This is like the style of the websites that we that I used to do when I was starting with websites, we had a lot of frames. I’m going to say that I’m very not happy about it, because then you can just move the things here and you have this empty space. So this is But this whole thing is not very responsive. I would say, I can move this all the way here and then I don’t see what is in the columns there. Some people can say that, oh, this gives me flexibility. I can move it wherever I want to, but it’s just, I don’t know. It’s just weird. What so we have pretty much everything is like a table of data. Nothing wrong with that. It’s not very visual. The visualization of the progress is just like this one progress bar, which to me is very limited. But I mean, he can get the things done, right. Here we have the title of dialog. But the alignment is a little bit off when it comes to the individual fields inside of it. Of course, as I was always saying this thing, it bothers me because it scroll bar doesn’t show you that much. It’s just annoying. Then all these buttons, they have the they have the same color. Which I think maybe if you like will not go forward, it would be maybe green or light blue. But the cancel would be maybe I don’t know, grayish to tone it down a little bit. The form itself, I guess. You can get things done. It doesn’t look very, very neat. It’s literally a bunch of fields. That may be if you let’s say group them into I don’t know, let’s say I don’t know, let’s say like, here we have a project. Bom Bom. And then you have bom, bom, bom, bom about field. And then you have another category which is IML something extra or whatever. thing that would be better than just having all the fields together group so closely.

Then after I created the project, we saw the status, I think it was orange when it was still important. The segmentation, everything happened pretty smoothly, pretty fine. I liked a preview of the of the source, I mean, preview of the file in context, which was in this case PDF, I had to create a PDF By the way, it didn’t allow me to preview Word document and excel XLS. But the matching worked fine. Or think only what I didn’t like was in the example of the dark. Let me show you is the Oh no, no, it looks fine. Well, no, it doesn’t look see it just it just did something. Like when I loaded for the first time I look fine, just like it looks fine. In the final document that I got. That one is fine. I did have some issues with the editor with the packs but nothing significant. I got the files back fine. Or German. I skipped the chicken Japanese because I don’t want to spend my evening copy pasting translations. There’s also a place here where you can probably Connect mt API, maybe get get that working. But yeah, I mean, for an open source, project, it’s not bad. I can see people doing some things here, maybe like some simple projects, we have projects of one file. But if I had, let’s say, three projects with n files, I don’t know how I would be able to do it here. Maybe I would have to somehow combined the files together in one file, and then have it uploaded here, which would then make sure that extra work for you to process it to prepare it and then to post process it once you get it both translate in one file, but the client actually send you with 10 files. So that could be a problem.
